We are committed to preparing our students for a beautiful and profitable career. Besides teaching creative cosmetology skills through hands-on client experience, textbooks, and instruction, we also emphasize business management and personal development.
The Cosmetology program is a 66-credit, three-semester program. that provides basic training in hair cutting, styling, coloring, and perming; skin care; and manicuring, pedicuring, and artificial nails. Students may also choose to earn only the Hairstylist program which is a 40-credit, two-semester certificate focusing on hair cutting, styling, coloring, and perming
Personalized instruction includes: classroom based “theory” and “practical” training using mannequins, fellow students, and actual patrons. Services for patrons from the community are provided in our salon, under the supervision of licensed instructors. In addition to those components, business fundamentals and skills are emphasized as a part of our curriculum.
During their time at DMTC, students take part in community projects where their skills are highly valued, get to hear from experienced professionals in their field, and prepare to sit for the Colorado State Board of Cosmetology/Barbering exam where DMTC students have 100% passing rates.
Employment of barbers, hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists is projected to grow 16 percent nationwide, about as fast as the average for all occupations. A large number of these job openings will stem from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations, retire, or leave the occupation for other reasons. Almost half of these professionals are self‐employed while others work flexible schedules. Our students are a part of the beauty and fashion industry by either working in a salon or owning one of their own.
A successful career in barber and cosmetology occupations requires a neat personal appearance, strong interpersonal skills, and a good image, and attitude. Since many businesses also sell product, effective salesmanship and business skills are also important. An understanding of fashion, art, and technical design are also useful skills.
