Technical Drafting Program

Technical Drafting

Drafters create technical drawings and plans that are used in construction, architecture, and engineering. Their drawings show details and dimensions, explain procedures, and list materials. These technicians may work under engineers and can specialize in Civil, Architectural or Mechanical Drafting. Our program consists of Core Technical Drafting and then students can choose a specialty.

The fast‐paced Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry that relies on 3D Modeling is expected to need between 30,000 to 50,000 skilled workers nationally in the next 10 years. A foundation of basic computer aided drafting (CAD) classes is offered at Delta‐Montrose Technical College to support the main focus of 3D modeling skills in this highly technical environment.

Our students begin with the Technical CAD Drafting core program that is designed to qualify students for entry‐level employment. They will learn all basic drafting and AutoCAD skills applicable to general drafting positions. A strong emphasis on in‐depth knowledge of AutoCAD software from AutoDesk is a component of this course but they also use Inventor and Civil 3D from AutoDesk and SolidWorks as well. Students may then continue on to specialize in Civil CAD, Architectural CADD, or Mechanical CAD technology where they gain a basic foundation in each of those disciplines.

The drafters that are educated at DMTC prepare technical drawings and plans used to build everything from manufactured products, machinery, houses, and office buildings to pipelines and roads. This program is also an excellent option for professionals who want to upgrade their construction and remodeling skills such as architects, landscapers, interior designers, civil engineers, and project managers. Within the drafting occupation there are a number of specialties that all require the mechanical ability and visual aptitude of an AutoCAD technician.
