A variety of the classes in the Business program are available through the Community Education Department. The classes are offered days, evenings, weekends, and as independent study. These classes may be offered in full, or in a modular format. They are transferable into the full-time program for students desiring to work toward a business certificate. ACC101 Fundamentals of Accounting 3 Credits
Presents the basic elements and concepts of accounting, with emphasis on the procedures used for maintaining journals, ledgers, and other related records, and for the completion of end-of-period reports for small service and merchandising businesses.
ACC121 Accounting Principles I 4 Credits
Introduces the study of accounting principles for understanding of the theory and logic that underlie procedures and practices. Major topics include the accounting cycle for service and merchandising companies, special journals and subsidiary ledgers, internal control principles and practices, notes and interest, inventory systems and costing, plant assets and intangible asset accounting, and depreciation methods and practices.
ACC122 Accounting Principles II 4 Credits
Continues the study of accounting principles as they apply to partnerships and corporations. Major topics include stocks and bonds, investments, cash flow statements, financial analysis, budgeting, and cost and managerial accounting.
ACC125 Computerized Accounting 3 Credits
Introduces the capabilities of computer applications in accounting. Includes solving accounting problems of a financial nature and hardware and software controls.
ACC138 Payroll and Sales Tax 3 Credits
Acquaints students with laws pertaining to payroll and sales taxes including record keeping rules. Student prepare various federal, state and local forms for reporting payroll taxes and sales taxes. A computerized payroll simulation is included in the course.
BTE102 Keyboarding Applications I 2 Credits
Designed for students with minimal keyboarding skills. Introduces letters, tables, memos, and manuscripts. Emphasizes speed and accuracy.
BTE103 Keyboarding Applications ll 3 Credits
Reinforces basic keyboarding formats and procedures. Productivity and decision-making skills are exercised. Emphasizes speed and accuracy.
BUS181 Internship 1-6 Credits
Provides students with hands-on training in their career field. Occurs in a business setting arranged through a Student Work Experience (SWE)/Internship Coordinator, or by utilizing a current employment organization. Student is expected to work a minimum of 7.5 hours per week. Students attend 3 seminars during the semester of enrollment. Class utilizes cooperative work experience or project methods depending on the individual situation.
BUS217 Business Communication & Report Writing 3 Credits
Emphasizes effective business writing and covers letters, memoranda, reports, application letters, and resumes. Includes the fundamentals of business communication and an introduction to international communication.
CIS103 Learning Windows 1 Credit
Provides foundational skills in Windows operating system for personal use. This course is designed for the more mature learner and/or those students who wish to advance at a slower pace.
CIS110 Introduction to the PC 1 Credit
Provides the beginning computer user with hands-on experience in the elementary use of the personal computer. This course introduces the basic feature of and the terminology associated with personal computers, including topics such as database, spreadsheet, and word processing.
CIS130 Introduction to Internet 1 Credit
Enhances the student's knowledge of the Internet and its resources. Individuals learn terminology in dealing with the Internet. Includes privacy and copyright issues with information retrieved from the Internet. Students experience the use of e-commerce, multimedia and e-mail. Explores searching the Internet and credibility of information obtained with searches.
CIS135 Complete PC Word Processing: Word 3 Credits
Explores a complete array of word processing skills. The skills needed to create, edit, format, and printing documents are covered. Other topics include character, paragraph, and page formats, the use of spelling checkers and thesaurus, hyphenation, tables, mail merge, document design, and graphics.
CIS136 Microsoft Office Specialist Certification: Word 1 Credit
Prepares students for the Microsoft Office Specialist certification examination for Word. Students use software to determine strengths and weaknesses and elect to review and prepare for either the Core or Expert level exam.
CIS140 Microsoft Outlook 1 Credit
Introduces the functions used in Microsoft Outlook including e-mail messages, calendar, contacts, tasks, journals, and notes.
CIS146 Database Application Development: Access 3 Credits
Covers the PC database concepts necessary to create database applications. Includes programming, shared files, resource locking, and database recovery.
CIS149 Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Prep: Access 1 Credit
Prepares students for the Microsoft Office Specialist certification examination for Access. Students use software to determine strengths and weaknesses and elect to review and prepare for the Core level Certification exam.
CIS155 PC Spreadsheet Concepts: Excel 3 Credits
Exposes the student to a wide range of uses of the electronic spreadsheet with special emphasis on using it as a business tool. Includes fundamentals and terms, creating and saving workbooks, entering and using formulas, formatting, printing, multiple-page workbooks, creating charts, entering and using functions, managing lists, and simple macros.
CIS159 Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Prep: Excel 1 Credit
Prepares students for the Microsoft Office Specialist certification examination for Excel. Students use software to determine strengths and weaknesses and elect to review and prepare for either the Core or Expert level Certification exam. The MOUS test is not included in this course.
CIS162 Advanced Presentation Graphics 1 Credit
Focuses on delivery and integration of presentation software. Students will learn to rehearse, modify and deliver their presentations. This course will emphasize the integration features of the software as students learn how to share presentations, work together on development of presentations and to integrate their presentations with other programs.
CIS167 Desktop Publishing 3 Credits
Introduces the concepts and applications for desktop publishing using work processing software. Emphasizes page layout and design with techniques for incorporating text and graphics and final production of printed documents.
COM106 Violence & Sexual Harassment in the Workplace 1 Credit
Focuses on the causes, risk factors, and prevention strategies for violence and sexual harassment in the workplace. Examines employer liability and legal considerations. Assists in establishing company policies and communication procedures.
COM108 Dealing with Unacceptable Employee Behavior 1 Credit
Identifies unacceptable work behavior such as negative attitudes. Focuses on the reasons why employees don't do what they are supposed to do. Provides guidelines to deal with specific performance and attitude problems. Introduces coaching and counseling techniques.
COM260 Listening at Work 1 Credit
Focuses on understanding and developing high-level listening skills because more than one-half of the communication process is listening. Explores a variety of listening techniques to improve skills.
COM262 Communicating with Impossible People 1 Credit
Introduces participants to the concepts of `impossible` communicators and the techniques used to deal with them more effectively. Emphasizes active participation in skill building exercises. It is a two day, one unit course.
ENG030 Basic Writing Skills 2 Credits
Focuses on sentence and basic paragraph structure and development. Enables the student to review and improve grammar, usage, and punctuation skills while employing critical thinking strategies and the writing process to respond to a wide variety of writing situations.

Serves as an introductory course intended for newer employees in the saving institutions business and for established employees desiring to learn more about the business in which they work. Covers the origin and growth of saving institutions, their roles in the world of business, their intermediary function, their relationship to the housing industry and markets, the regulatory bodies and government agencies with which institutions work, and the competitive arena in which they operate. Enables the student to acquire a solid foundation for more specialized areas of study.
FIN119 Deposit Accounts and Services 2 Credits
Provides an in-depth study of the nature, ownership and classification of deposit accounts. Focuses on types of accounts that institutions are authorized to offer, the different methods of classifying accounts and terms and conditions for payment of interest. Emphasizes the procedural aspects of deposit accounts. Provides a better understanding of an institution's procedures and perspective of the competitive environment.
FIN136 Introduction to Secondary Marketing 1 Credit
Focuses on the various facets of a traditional secondary marketing department. Explores the historical implications of secondary marketing, locking/pricing an individual loan, the concept of risk management, pipeline management, product development, and the overall department structure.
FIN255 Understanding and Selling Bank Products 2 Credits
Focuses on the six human relations skills that encourage smooth, clear and personal communication with the customer. Emphasizes the basic steps of selling, information about bank products, and product benefits (rather than the features) and how to spot clues about customer needs. Covers the importance of cross-selling, how to recognize the typical prospects for various categories of bank products, and how to suggest products and overcome resistance to conclude the sale.
MAN116 Principles of Supervision 3 Credits
Studies the principles and techniques of supervising and motivating personnel. This course is designed for students who are interested in supervising others or for those currently in supervision. Course content focuses on the human interaction in supervision.
MAN128 Human Relations in Organizations 3 Credits
Explores the importance of effective communication in our personal lives as well as in the world of business. Practical business applications such as employee motivation, handling customer complaints, and effectively resolving conflict in the workplace will be a major part of the curriculum.
MAR106 Marketing Your Image 3 Credits
Teaches students how to market themselves to prospective employers, clients, professional groups, and audiences of all types. Major emphasis will be placed on skills used to gain employment (resumes, interviewing, and professional appearance) and on skills used to achieve continued personal success (professional behavior and attitude). The course will include at least one simulated interview.
MAR235 Consumer Behavior 3 Credits
Enables the student to understand the variables that affect consumer behavior in the marketplace and the implications of this knowledge for marketing decisions and strategies.

Furthers the study of fractions and mixed numbers. Also included are vocabulary, operations and applications of ratio, proportion, percent, area, perimeter, US and metric measures, integers, and an introduction to algebraic expressions and the solution of basic first-degree equations.

MAT090 Introductory Algebra 4 Credits
Includes first-degree equations, inequalities, formulas, polynomials, algebraic fractions, factoring polynomials, solving quadratic equations by factoring, and applications. Coordinate geometry, graphing linear equations and inequalities, and systems of linear equations may be included.

MAT112 Financial Mathematics 3 Credits
Covers topics including pricing, taxes, insurance, interest, annuities, amortization, investments using financial calculators and spreadsheets.
PHI120 Applied Ethics 3 Credits
Focuses on different applications of ethics in contemporary society and disciplines, including Business Ethics, Biomedical ethics, Genetic ethics, issues of dental ethics, and other valid applications.
SBM101 Starting a Small Business 1 Credit
Provides a brief overview of various topics related to starting a small business. Some topics are types of businesses, location, image, insurance, permits, and licenses.
SBM103 Legal Aspects of a Small Business 1 Credit
Provides a brief overview of legal issues involved in starting and managing a small business. The course focuses on business organizations, contracts, and agreements and protecting the business.
SBM106 Recordkeeping for a Small Business 1 Credit
Provides an overview of recordkeeping for a small business. Students learn basic bookkeeping skills and key recordkeeping requirements.
SBM108 Marketing for a Small Business 1 Credit
Provides a brief overview of the marketing functions applied to a small business. Topics include planning a marketing strategy, promoting a business, competitive analysis, and customers and prospects.
SBM110 Managing a Small Business 1 Credit
Provides a brief overview of the management process as it applies to the small business. Concepts covered in the course include setting goals, conducting evaluations, and analyzing financial records.
SBM112 Financing a Small Business 1 Credit
Provides a brief overview of the basics of financing a small business. Topics include sources of capital, types of business loans, and maintenance of cash flow.
SBM113 Writing a Business Plan 1 Credit
This is the final course in the small business certificate program. Students will write a business plan from the material they have developed in the other courses.
SOC218 Sociology of Diversity 3 Credits
Explores the variety of intergroup relations regarding race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and other diversity issues. Patterns of prejudice, discrimination and possible solutions to these issues will be addressed.
SPE115 Public Speaking 3 Credits
Combines the basic theory of speech communication with public speech performance skills. Emphasis is on speech delivery, preparation, organization, support, and audience analysis.
